MGM 16016 + 7XL Good combo? -
03.25.2007, 01:28 PM
I'm getting a motor and esc for a Hyper 7. I'll be using 4s lipo. I'd like to try the MGM 16016 with a 7xl. Has anyone tried this combo? Yes - I've searched the forum and didn't find any info regarding this.
I'll get a better motor later. The 7xl will hopefully be good enough for now.
Like I've said before - I appreciate this forum and the help I can get here. The "brushless community" here in Norway is, well there isn't any. Thanks.

The MGMs are quite popular and tough controllers. I'm sure you're gonna be happy with this setup.

I would get an MM ESC instead. No need spending extra money on an expensive controller when the MM can do the same job just fine.

BP has a good point but with MGM you will have more tolerance to heat, much tougher controller.Either will work fine but if I can afford the extra bucks I willl go for the MGM but one clear advantage of the Mamba Max controller is the ability to hook it over to the computer and easier to adjust.Have fun!!

I've considered the MM. I believe that a true 1/8 controller like the Quark or MGM 160 is better than the MM. A MM + Neu combo could obviously be an option. I'd need a UBEC with the MM, but wouldn't the MGM be fine without one?
There are just too many ways you do this. To many combos of esc+motor. And too many opinions

Also, a cumbersome fact about the MGM is that you'll be scratching your head alot when you try to program it, but it becomes very easy once you know the trick.
I'm only narrating what others had said about the programming and just today, I recieved the MGM 12032 controller from Mike and the maual is indeed brain storming. Lots of grammatical mistakes and there isn't enough details. The instructions are sort of like that of schulze. Otherwise, I am very happy with the way it looks and designed.
I hope it'll perform well.

Expect issues with the Neu and MM setup. There are quite a few reports of bad cogging with this combo. The MM apparently does not like Neu motors yet. There was a rumor of a software fix, but I think CC is too busy on the MMM to devote time to tweaking software to support a motor the ESC is not technically supposed to support anyway.

This means that the MGM is a good esc, but the MM is capable of doing the same job. If there aren't any obvious reasons why I should get the MGM then I might save some money and get the MM.
I forgot about the Neu + MM problem. Thanks for reminding me. Would the MGM perform better than the MM with a Neu motor?
I should just get another Quark.......but one of the best things about this hobby is trying out new products.
@captain - thanks for the info on the manual.

I've never tried the MGM on a Neu, but I hear they work well together. I am using the Quark 125B on a Neu 1512 2d (2600kv) and it is silky smooth with no cogging. You probably will want to mod the Quark with additional heatsinks as they do tend to get warm and they don't like 6s. So, it looks like it's between the MGM and the Quark if you want to use a Neu.

Thanks BrianG. I've lived in Cedar Rapids. I know I can trust people from Iowa :) This basically comes down to that I should get the MGM if I plan on upgrading to the Neu motor, but if I want to keep a tight budget and stick with the 7XL the MM is the right choice. The MGM doesn't offer anything "extra" vs. the MM when it's only a 7XL.
Why should I have a tight budget? I'll have to add 25% tax/VAT on all purchases + a fee for importing goods to Norway. That's why I appreciate anyhing that can help me keep the cost down. I'll even have to pay 25% extra on the shipping cost..... The import limit in Norway is $30 :035: When I'm sitting here looking at the numbers it looks like the MM + 7XL will have to do for now.

But I'm not an Iowa native. :017:
Seriously, I think you will be happy with that combo. You might need a fan for the ESC depending on gearing/weight/drive style, etc; but most seem to like it.
Maybe by the time you decide to upgrade to the Neu, the elusive MM software update will be out and all will be well with the world. :)

Hippie, your Mamax is rather an older version than the ones available, now.
I think the newer versions are already out.

I have been running a 7XL and mamba max with 5s lipo's for a bit and never had a thermal. It should work great on 4s and a buggy (I would still ventilate the body for airflow) all of my running with 7xl and 5s was when its cool, so i'm putting a fan on it to help in the summer
Work because i gotta, play because i wanna
People here hate Nitro, I love it. I start it, run it about 50 ft from me and it dies, I go after it. Perfect exercise
