The idlers in an emaxx tranny are wider gears, which results in a larger contact area between the gears spreading the force over a larger surface. The steel spur gears are all very thin faces which concentrates the force in a very small area.

Plus a little lube in the emaxx tranny goes a long way.

Yes, but they have got a 3 times larger contact area. But steel on steel can work, no doubt.

Steel spurs... I bought a RR steel 72T spur back in the day with my STOCK emaxx, and it was eating my pinions up very quickly. 15 packs through it, and the pinions were razer blades.

Yeah, works for nitros too. Just a matter of the right pinion.

Well, I plan to see. It would be nice to be able to use steel pinions on some apps where using a plastic spur simply requires too much modification (CRT.5). It would also be nice to use the steel spurs simply because all the buggies come with them stock.

At any rate, I'll see how they do. If anything, I think I'll see greater wear on the Hyper 8 since it's a heavier vehicle, geared way too high (46/16) on a high kv motor (kv=2600 on 4s). Oddly enough, everything stays cool despite that.

I got a small tube of what looks like white lithium grease from my LHS. All the tube said was "Losi brand lubricant" or something like that.

Stock you dont need any the plastic is slippery enough, and most dont use any even with the streel idlers. I like just a little light grease in mine when I run the steel idler. I just like to a little something in there for the metal to metal of the top gear to the idler. Some say it adds a little resistance to the transmsion, but its so little that there is no way you can tell. At least I cant, not even by hand. Another thing it seems to keep the gears a little quieter. Less gear whine. I like quite.

Yeah, the grease adds a little stickiness (I guess that's what you would call it), but it sounded smoother when I used some. Doesn't take much. I just put a small dab on 3 spots of one of the gears and just spun the output shaft slowly until all the gears were fairly evenly coated. If you dab grease on the gears and then run it WOT, the grease will fling off onto the walls of the tranny which doesn't do much good.

As for the XRay XT8, I was looking forward to this truggy for so long, but now it seems that the XRay crew made some cost cutting changes since the XB8 that I will wait until they release a TQ version. Gotta love the no-C-Clip attitude of the buggy... going back is out of question for me... let's hope they bring a TQ or EC soon!

I know, I keep following the XRay news too. But I still hope they'll bring out a TQ soon.
