Personally, I like the square form factor. Makes it much easier to fit as much in a small area without wasted precious R/C real-estate.
I always thought the weakness of A123 cells was the shape and weight. Since they are inherently safe, the Al shell is really unneeded and could significantly lighten the package allowing more P cells for the same weight while improving current capability.
Since much focus is being put on improving hybrid performance and safety, I think most advances in battery tech will come from hybrids and then make their into R/C and other similar applications.
