I just re-read your original post, you may not have the motors wired properly, also the esc my act differently with brushed motors. It will take me a bit but I do have my ESC wires prewired to work for brushed motors, I just have to plug one in and see what it does... Did you follow the wiring diagram correctly? If I could only draw what I see in my head, then afford to build it, and finaly get to play with it...
