Meshing the Neu motor pinions

I haven't run it yet, still building, but I notice that the extreme notchiness of the neu motors creates a lot of clatter when rotating the pinion when meshed with the [RR] spur.
I'm hoping that the thing will smooth out when under power, or am I to expect a lot of gear noise at low-mid speeds ??
