battery charger??

I just purchased some GP race packs and was wondering if I just have a normal type charger with the peak detection and stuff. Its not a fancy charger at all.... real basic. Will a junk charger damage the battery in the long run. Does it matter what kind of charger I have. I guess Im just concerned becuase this is my first decent pack of batteries and wanted to know if the charger makes a big difference.... charging, battery life in the long run,... things like that.
