If the motor wires were touching when you turned it on before, that could have been the source of the puff, smoke. The Quark toggles the power to the motor when you power up. This is where the jingle sound comes from that you hear normally.

By all means, try it with a motor attached. It's the only way you're gonna be able to program it anyways. An ultra safe way to do this, if you're unsure is to remove the motor pinion to prevent any unwanted movement.
