I gots a Yota. - 12.01.2007, 03:18 AM

Yeah, so anyway, I decided I wanted a truck. I figured, while I was at it, it should be 4wd too. I also thought, well, I've always loved the looks and durability older Toyotas have. I knew I also wanted a 4 banger because they run forever and still get somewhat good gas mileage. So after all that, I found one in the local Classifieds magazine not too far away, checked it out, and now, I gots this:

'85 Toyota Xtra Cab with a freshly rebuilt 22R 4 banger, stick shift, 35" Maxxis tires, and (coolest of all) solid front axle. The rear has already been regeared with 4.88's, but I plan to add a locker to it, and regear the front to 4.88's with a limited slip too. It's lifted around 5" or so, plus 2" body lift, and I think I'll stick with that......we'll see. Oh yeah, all for $3k: w00t!

Only issues right now are minor:
1. One of the battery leads broke off, so it's a two man starting procedure, then just run it off the alternator (which it does fine). Should be a simple fix, I'll show it off to my Yota friend and go from there.
2. Brakes........it has barely 25% braking power right now, guy had "cahones" quite a bit bigger than me to drive it to my house on the freeway at 75......most of the braking is done by down shifting. Again, I'll hit up my Yota friend and other gearheads and see what it could be.
3. Carb is real rich right now, not sure if it'll smog (stupid California laws. Once again, Yota friend and other gearheads will be consulted.

Here's mine, before and after. I drove this in high school. '83 short bed reg cab. I rebuilt the 22R as well, check out the last pic. I can help you with the brakes and stuff like that. I did a lot of work on my truck when I had it so feel free to ask me anything. Oh, and I used a Weber carb, you might want to look into those.

First got it, on 32s

On 35s

On 35 Boggers and some primer

Door panels and sub box I made (no $$$ in high school)

Nice truck gtxracer, I really love the old Hilux style body! Problem is, now that it's at my house, it won't start. I put a new Walmart battery in it, and it won't even click or anything. My friend is coming over later to see if he can help, I'm kinda hoping he can.

Out with the 22R!!! Build you some custom motor mounts and drop in a 350 and matching tranny. Have some custom drive lines made. Then crawl up anything!!! Been there done that.

Thanks Dabid. Check your alternator and starter. Get them tested at Autozone for free.

Both are fine, ignition is crapping out though. It has quite a large dead spot where it just doesn't want to kick over, but if I wiggle the key just right it'll do it.......not fun when it takes 5 minutes to find that "magic spot" though. I'm going to put in a momentary hold switch to go around this monkey buisiness, it'll be much much better.

OK I don't know if converting to electric would fix that. Nice truck too. One day when i am feeling rich I want to by an old tough beast like that and go a bit nuts on it. There aren't many solid axle truck still being sold these days, here at least. Wouldn't mind one of these though http://www.toyota.com.au/toyota/vehi...12_0_8,00.html.

Since you mentioned it check out Zeropointbug's signature. He did this or is still working on it. Not sure.

I saw zeropoints sig that's kind of why I had it in my head. I PM'ed zeropoint about it a while ago. I have a friend who has been doing up an old australian ute for a while and he has decided to convert it to electric. I think he wants to use it as a street legal drag car and flog the v8's at the drag races.
