High voltage ESC programming options

High voltage ESC programming options - 12.11.2007, 03:42 PM

I want to get some input an opinions on what a high voltage (6s +) ESC for cars should have for programming options. I have a few here, maybe some of you smart ones have better ideas or suggestions.

I want:

Changeable switching frequencies. This could quite down some motors, and for outrunners a lower frequency just might work better (but I aint no engineer)
Selectable motor type. Slotless, slotted, high pole count, or even an averaged for all type.


What else would be good? I think some more in depth programming options would be good to make sure an ESC is best for all motors instead of the best for some or decent with all. Guys wanting to use DD outrunner setups certainly don't get the best out of an ESC that is made to work best for two pole AND 7 pole.

Exponential or linear throttle/break
timing advance

I'd like to add:

Current limiting (to protect battery)
Linear BEC voltage setting
Thermal cutoff (custom set)

All of the mm options, especially the throttle and brake curves.

I really like sme of the quark option, such as delayed braking and the adjustable neutral deadband. Also the on/off seting for the failsafe is nice.

Plus everything you mentioned too, it all sounds good!

Definately throttle and brake curves like the MM. It becomes infinitely tunable

If there were a way to adjust the ESC's level of EMF feedback sensitivity, I think it would broaden the rpm range that sensorless would operate idealy.

Castle Creations software package and Castle Link is a GREAT thing. If it were expanded upon, it could be even better. Let's change the brain to record the data from the last several runs. How about a few ports that will allow the addition of some temperature probes to further add to the data collected? To put it in a nutshell, let's integrate an onboard data logger.

Internal construction needs to be improved. If an ESC uses a BEC that is linear, then it should be included in the heat sink construction. Most aren't. I feel like this is alot of what causes so many headaches in the BEC area.

If an ESC is going to be rated so close to it's absolute limits, then I think good heat sink construction is a must. Another thing is, just a simple fan can provide for some much lower operating temps. Heat is the enemy inside an ESC.

Heat is stress level. A cooler running ESC will provide a longer more efficient service life.
