Which Motor? - 12.12.2007, 08:35 PM

So I guess this is kinda a noob question, so I'll try to make it short. Which motor would be best for my setup? I'll be running 12 NIMH cells with the stock revo tranny locked in second, and the mm esc. I have been reading around a bit and have noticed that everyone pretty much runs either the 9 or 8xl fiego motors. But after doing some more research, others have said to choose the motor that will run in the rpm "sweet spot", being around 35,000 rpm. So with the voltage I'll be running, should I go with the 7xl ? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Tyler

7xl will probably be fine on 12 cells only. I personally would just go with the 8xl. It will runn cooler and if you want a little more speed you can just gear up a touch.

I have never been able to get a 7xl to run cool enough for my liking. Of couse its been a while since I ran NiMH cells too.

Id go for the 8XL. Plenty of speed and it will run cooler than the 7xl.

I can't decide if its more fun
to make it...
or break it...

Most people choose a 9XL with the MM because that motor will generally pull less current (assuming you don't gear too high), and it would be easier on the ESC. An 8XL or 7XL could pull bursts well up into the 150A range. But yes, most of the time you pick a motor with a kv that will get you into the 30-35k rpm range with the voltage you are using.

So should I go with the 9xl then, or go with the 8xl? Should I go with the 9 just to be on the safe side?
