MGM 22418 & 6S LiPo is No GOOD - 01.01.2008, 04:38 PM

I posted this in another thread, but then I thought it might be better to start a new thread about this …

I just got two 22418 MGM's (one for me and one for a buddy) and both were to be in 1/8 buggy using a Neu 1515/1.5D ... anyway, on 3s Lipo it was doing fine .. but when on 6s .... white smoke and that sweet smell of burning electronics ... So, I thought it could be the brand spanking new Neu motor so I used another motor that works just fine with a Quark 125 Monster Pro..... long story short ... both are fried now :( .. ohh yeah and that was over about a WHOLE 3min of using the ESC ....

Does anybody else have or had the same problem with this ESC? … And how is MGM customer service?

Anyway, I e-mailed them about the problem and waiting for their response …

Oh, God I wasted so much money on making a new 1/8 chassis purely for a brushless setup and I was betting on the 22418 that it would handle the 6s LiPo and work nicely on a 1/8 … I will keep you guys posted on the outcome?

Az

Been using my 22418 with 6S Flightpowers and a Neu 1521 for over 2 months now with no problems. The guy I run with has a 16018 with 6S Neupower batteries and a 1515. He beats the heck out of it and no smoke. I hope this isn't a bad batch as I was getting ready to order another one. Keep us informed, please!

I run a MGM22418 with 5S flightpowers, 1515 1.5D/F, and 18/46 gearing in my Jammin CRT. All I see is a hint of cogging if I mash on the throttle (I can fix this by gearing differently). Temps are super cool.

I also have another MGM22418 that I run with 6S flightpowers, 1515 2.5D/F, 16/51 gearing in a HEAVY all aluminum Emaxx (big honkin MT beadlock tires & rims too). Zero cogging and temps are well within acceptable limits-quite cool actually.

I have not experienced-knock on wood-any problems with these ESCs...I think there has to be other issues that caused your problem.

I had my 16018 go the same way, I sent it back for repair, no word yet.

Good to hear :) It just might be that those two had something wrong with them.

Here is the settings that were on both.

The burned_one pic was the first one that worked for about 1 min before it burned. That was on 1515/1.5D and two MaxAmps 5000mah 11.1v

The other_one pic worked on another motor (XLT-1 Nemesis) motor using one 5000mah 11.1v LiPo and then two LiPo's (22.2v) and the rest is history

What was your gearing...and was you gear mesh okay? I keep my gear mesh a little farther apart than some folks...just a hair. But it helps the gears spin with less resistance. Not trying to insult your intelligence but I once saw a guy that had the motor pinion pressed up against the spur so hard that the car would barely move! That would definitely put some strain on the motor and ESC. I'll get some screen shots of my MGM settings in the next day or so and post them...but in all honesty, I didn't really adjust too much...I think just the battery and brake.

hehehe ... its funny, because I do the exact same thing ... I always play around with the mesh, to see which would yield the least amount of resistance without creating to much slack .....

The gearing was 14/46, but at any rate the buggy was on a stand, I was just testing and making sure everything was ok, since I'm planning to build a few of them for myself and some friends :)

Man...it sounds like a bad batch. But that just doesn't seem possible...

I assume you ordered them from Mike. What did he say?

Was it a stick radio? If so...the green was sort of like olive green right? Sounds like a Futaba Attack...same one I had.
