maxx prototype center diff - 09.28.2007, 03:13 PM

just finished prototype of center diff for my maxx mounted inside the trannny.

the diff has couple shims and 8x12 bearing on the cup side that goes directly to tranny case. revo axle stub works as output shaft on cup side

e-savage tranny shaft is on the other side as it had holes in right places to make it 40mm long.

bevel gear is secured to the cup directly by two screws and by another two through modified maxx drive dog or modified kyosho spur (just shaved off gears and jbwelded 2 screws to hold 2nd speed gear)
There is again 8x12 bearing inside the gear as it goes over the bevel gear and of course 6x12 outside

I like the kyosho version better but hard to say if those srews will hold.

I still need to clean up the drivedog as jbweld is bit messy to work with
In the worst case I will have the gear holder made from aluminum/steel

If weather allows it i will test it on sunday.

What kind of mount would you run with this.

Its designed to fit inside the stock emaxx tranny, inplace of the output gears (like a revo CD sort-of).

As a prototype it does look promising, but it would be nice to have the gear holder machined from metal, and perhaps remove the teeth from the ring gear which is attached to the diff cup. Or better yet, machine the output gear assembly so that it mounts in place of the ring gear & gear holder, but is the same/correct diamentions.

i wanted to use kyosho spur with shaved teeth instead of the metal gear but the spur is just too tight and i needed to put it on/off too many times during making the holder and it was annoying. so thu spur ended up as gear holder.
having one piece unit would be very nice but thats long term run to find someone which machinery thats able to make it.

if the diff helps in handling i will probably make the metal gear holder and maybe shave off teeth from the bevel gear (they just add few grams of weight as look does not really matter as its hidden inside tranny)

just wish i had more space at home to get better equipment for work with metal

I have the coupler made from Nylon. Fits perfectly.
Will start with 20k oil this time as 50k was just too much
So easy to have center diff in tranny :)

the thing in right is home made sprong preassure plate

Usually the bearing on the outside of the ring gear takes all the load, now it's on that long shaft and the inside of the ring gear. Does the inside of the ring gear get worn where the shaft goes through (or the shaft itself) ? or any other issues from putting load on different parts.

here is 8x12 inner bearing bearing as there is still about 1mm of the bevel gear and of course 6x12 outside

I ran the diff once and only damage I had was to the 8x12 bearing that is on the diff cup and in the tranny box (instead of the usual 6x12 bearing) - the shielding came off

I will see in the spring as I am not running my maxx when its freezing outside :) Thats why i have my 1/18 trucks for inside racing
