Jazz 80-6-18 - 03.06.2008, 02:35 PM

Thinking about this controller for a 4 - 5s lipo or 6s A123 monster truck application (Neu 1515 1.5d). Anyone know of any issues I should consider? Also, is the ProgCard worth it? Thanks,

Good controller. Not much tuning options, but it does what it's supposed to do.

Lutach - do you think I'd be pushing my luck with the amps if I did a 55-10-32? I just realized this model was available at tower...

I used the lower AMP version in my truck and we have members here with the 55-10-32 and loving them. They are solid and underrated controller. Good heat sink and ventilation will keep it nice and cool. Just watch the gearing and I wouldn't exceed 80A spikes. People have seen it go higher then 100A though in aircraft.

For a 6s A123 setup i would recommend the Jazz 80-6-18. I used it in my 9lbs Buggy with 12 cells Nimhs or 4s4p Sony 18650VT. My highest recorded peak was at 120A (my eagletree micropower is speced at 100A max) or 1200 Watt. I removed the heatshrink and put a heatsink on top of the cooling plate because it thermaled during summer. With 6s1p A123 you should be able to see peaks up to 100A @14V. But for MT application i guess you think more of a 2p setup. You will not need a ubec as it has an integrated switching BEC which can be used up to 6s lipo.

I now use a Jazz 55-10-32 with a Neu 1515/2Y (1100kV) with 10s1p A123 in my 11lbs truggy and my highest recorded peaks are at 100A+ -> up to 2.5KW. I also put a small heatsink on the cooling plate eventhough it never thermalled. You will need a ubec with this one.

Both Esc are very reliable. You only need to program it to one of 2 available car modes (forward only or forward with reverse). This is done with your transmitter. I never needed the prog card.

Only one downside: When you go from full throttle to neutral you might notice that your motor will brake for a split second before it starts to freewheel. When you go from full throttle to half throttle the esc seems to slow the motor down to its new level. This can be odd on a high grip surface or when you jump your car.

I was just looking at one of my early videos with the Kontronik 3SL 40-14-32 and it didn't do the brake thing you mentioned. My 55-10-32 didn't do that either, but I messed it up when I really over geared my truck.

I think it does depend what motor you are using with those kontronik ESCs. I never noticed it with a 2 pole Fun 600/25. But i noticed it with a 8 pole Graupner 600M, a Neu 1512/2Y and a Neu 1515/2Y. The last 3 motors both have a noticeable resistance when you turn them with your fingers. The first one not (comparable to a feigao).

That might happen due the the strong relationship of the magent and stator of the 4 and 8 pole motors. That little brake action happened when I had the Align 600L motor in the truck now that I think about it.

The tranmitter/receiver also seems to be part of the "problem". I had to replace my old but trustworthy AM remote today. I now run a 2.4Ghz system. No braking phenomenon (Jazz55+Neu1515/2Y) when going from full throttle to neutral anymore. I'm very pleased to say the least

No wonder we were not at the same page . The only thing most people have to consider, is getting practice with the brakes. The more voltage the stronger the brake. It would be nice if Kontronik added some kind of brake strength setting like many other controllers do.

Just thought of one other question - from the specs, I couldn't tell if this controller has an onboard LVC or not?

Most of mine has a Mode 9 I think which is for lipo cut-off.

Positive. The Jazz 80 has an LVC (mode 9). If you have further questions you might consult the online manual. The english language part starts at page 25.
