I just put a small cable tie or piece of wire (not electrical wire) through the little hole in the shifter shaft then wrap it around something near by, so the shaft stays pushed in (for second gear).

Ok so i got a golden horizon steering kit and installed it this afternoon unfortunately no pics as the camera is dead. I took it out to a local warehouse facility and ran it in the dirt out back. I made rooster tails almost 6 feet long and 2 feet high. Ended the run with the pinion slipping off the shaft, any suggestions on this? I didnt think that lock tight was a good idea but let me know if this is usually the solution.

Im looking for a picture i thought i saved of some homemade wheelie bars. Anyone have anything that uses a shock setup or any suggestions on a premade one?

I just use a Collar to lock it in second. I have the shaft pulled out and the collar on the shaft to keep it from going back in.

If you have the shift fork pulled out that means it is in 1st. 2nd gear is closest to the motor plate side of the tranny.

I do believe that those stock shoulder screws for the steering linkage are the same screws used on the shock mounts. I just use titanium screws with aluminum tubing for collars. For the pinion gear blue loctite will help plus a flat spot on the shaft will lock it in better. I also place heatshrink over the pinion/set-screw to keep it from comming out all the way in the event that it does come lose. You are going through what most of us experience with an RTR out of the box vehicle. It will keep on breaking parts until you take teh plunge and bulletproof your truck using mostly metal hopup parts. One of the strongest and cheapest versions for making this transition is the FLM gear sold here on RC Monster.
