I dont know that it makes a difference..the newer ones are more picky it seems like. They are all a timebomb on 5s and will smoke, and could possibly take down the lipos with it. The people running it typically run on the street on wide open passes...half throttle is what kills it, the switching w/high voltage...and a 4 pole motor makes it even worse.

I dont see them being timebombs...Ive been running 2 MMs on 5s for quite a while and never had an issue. Both are going on close to a year now. As long as you set it up properly and gear it properly and a 25mm fan and they are just fine. One is a track setup and the other is a basher. Both run just fine on 5s. They were both in buggies and I just recently moved one of them over to a truggy on 5s and still not seeing any issues. I really think that most of the MM problems stem from people running Neu motors with them. The new software make them run OK. but they still dont run the Neus as smooth as they run a 2 pole motor. I get random cogging still and the cogging is what kills the esc. The 5s just makes it easier to fry when it cogs cuz everything is closer to the limit already.

The newer ones are a little more finicky like you said. But from what I understand, they either run on 5s, or they dont. It seems kinda luck of the draw. I dont have a newer one to reference though.

I can't decide if its more fun
to make it...
or break it...

Is that why you are using a USA made NEU motor?
