I have changed and run RCM pinions several times on my buggy w/ no probs.
1. MBX-6 T8 1900KV, RX8 ON 4S
2. MBX-5T 1520, MMM ON 5S
3. MBX-5 ONROAD CONVERSION 1515, MMM ON 5S
4. MRX-3 ON ROAD CONVERSION 1512, MMM ON 6S
5. TEN T 2650 T8, MMP ON 3S
Could be a bad piece of metal, or improper cool down during heat treat. I wouldn't read too much into it though. I would holler at mike and see what his take on it is though.
I would guess that that pinion is from an older batch - this is the 2nd one I have seen, actually(1st one was a smaller gears with a smaller "shank area") - the other was also a 32p from an early batch - from what I gather, the batch was actually over-hardened and caused some embrittlement - send it back and I will replace it. I thought I had filtered them all out (I put the kung-fu grip on the set screw on the batch that had the problem and threw away the ones that shattered), but a few likely got through before I realized the problem.
:)
Dam and I thought my work out schedule was paying off... Mike thanks for the offer - Hopefully I'll be ordering some stuff soon for a hyper ST conversion (I need to do something to try to keep with you...)
I have a 22T that I can use for now - it doesn't make sense for you to pay shipping on a single pinion ATM. We have to look after your commercial interests....
You can't by any chance get me a cracking price on a Hyper st?

It happens to the best sometimes. I had some of my guys do that before on several thousand (factoring in material and labor) worth of parts and it sucks.
I had the same issue with a 20t 32p 5mm bore pinion, however enough of the tapped hole was left and it has not come loose yet. I figured that I had cross-threaded the set screw, but was suprised when it cracked. Can't win them all...
