Poll..Deans or Gold Plug connectors for you batts - 07.15.2008, 09:30 PM

Just wondering what everyone prefers...I am considering Gold Plug connectors instead of Deans...just to try them...I personally find that the Gold connectors are MUCH easier to work with and soldier IMO

Definitely Deans - only time I've had a problem with them is when I applied heat for too long and it caused the plastic to get soft and the blade shifted position a bit. Solution - use a hot iron and solder quickly.

Usually, Deans or Traxxas connectors are the top choices. Some like the Anderson PowerPoles too. All of these are keyed and protected. By keyed, I mean it can be plugged in only one way to prevent reverse polarity. By protected, I mean that the contacts are insulated to prevent accidental shorting on any metal. The downside to these connectors is that they are only rated to around 50A, burst is a bit higher.

The larger bullet connectors can handle higher current, but due to their design, they aren't keyed. Someone could accidentally reverse the polarity and blow something. You can put a male and female connector on the battery as a form of keying, but then one contact isn't protected and increases the risk of accidental shorting.

What would be really nice, is some sort of plastic plug add-on that would allow 5.5-6mm bullets to snap in to provide the advantages of both types of connectors.

I have used deans and traxxas connectors and now prefer the traxxas connectors. Performance is virtually identical so that aside here is the reason I prefer traxxas connectors. They are in my opinion much easier to solder/assemble and put together/take apart. Simple as that for me. The deans however are smaller and look a little neater perhaps but I have now switched everything over to the traxxas connectors.

I was using deans before but changed to sermos (anderson power poles) just for the prices difference. But I am hearing a lot of good things from the Traxxas connectors

Actually the best thing to do is use an extra plug an put the pair together, then solder which ever one you need. The other plug will hold the blades in place where they need to be.

Neat idea - I'll try that next time. Also a bit more copper in play to disapate the heat from soldering.

I use deans on all of my RC stuff. The motorcycle packs get 6.5mm deans, but I have adapters for both the ESC and batteries so that I can use them with deans too. Works well, and makes putting packs in series a breeze. Positive is female on battery, and Negative is male. I use shrink wrap to keep them close together so there is less chance of short. Insulated male sides could be used to keep the positive terminal encased for storage.
