MMM with NO tone and nothing sended to the motor!!! ? - 10.06.2008, 10:52 AM

I tried to calibrate my MMM ( first one, V2).
When I plugged the batts, (4s2p4000)i saw a very little wite smoke comming out near the del light.
I unplug evrythingright away.
When I tried again, there was no tone at all from the MMM BUT seem to calibrate correctly exept sending signal to the motor. ( it's suppose to vibrate a little, but notting!!! When i pull the trigger, green and yellow del light, full brake, red and yellow light, neutral, yellow only, BUT the motor is not spinning at all !!!
Brand new 9xl motor.
Is there a way to verify if a brushless motor is still good like when we connect + and - to a 9v to a brushed motor to see if he's still spinning?
Thanks

You can connect a 1.5v AA battery across each phase it should turn the motor/magnet over to the next phase.

That, I would say, is the tell tale sign of a Burnt BEC circuit.

If you got smoke.. Something burnt.

No tones and nothing to the motor, try checking your solder joints in the wiress to the motor. might have a cold joint.

Have you got the plug from the MMM plugged into the RX the correct way around?

Servo going the wrong way is fixed by reversing the radio steering channel...

Yes brand new setup.

While you're at it, While you're at it, do a continuity test between each motor phase and the motor can (there should be ~infinite resistance).

Help me to check that tonight.
Just to be sure, by

each motor phase
you mean each wire.
red to wite, wite to black, black to red.
How I check that. That's my first brushless!

Thanks.

It sounds more like shorted phases and FET failure from the connectors against the heatsink. The MMM needs to go back - I thought the issue was more if it took the motor out in the process...

Brand new setup? Were the motor screws too long? If two screws bit into the coils, the motor can could short out the ESC blowing a phase. No matter what, I would have the ESC looked at if there was smoke in ANY area!

While you're at it, do a continuity test between each motor phase and the motor can (there should be ~infinite resistance).

Yes, each wire.

Actually, disconnect the motor from the ESC first. Test continuity between each motor wire (phase) to the motor case.

But also check the screw length to make sure they aren't touching the coils. I usually just gently screw in long screws by hand until I feel them touch the coils. Then, back them out a couple turns. This is the max length you should use (don't forget to account for the motor mount thickness).

I use RCmonster heatsink that add a good spacer between motor and the plate, so no prob there I think.
