what about using plastic pinion gears?

Plastic will not last. There is a reason all the pinions and CBs made to mesh with metal spurs are hardened.

i figured as much, but I saw these (the brass reinforced ones) and it got me wondering;

I had some of those left over from my brushed motor days. They did not work well with anything brushless... We easily ripped the teeth of them with a 9l on 3s in an emaxx.
