house got broken into yesterday

That the sucks. I've had my car broken into a few times, but nothing like a house. The worst part about it is that someone was inside your place touching/taking your shit.

No one just randomly just wanders into a house, finds one room and just takes all the good stuff and leaves the rest of the place untouched. Someone had to know what they were going for (assuming this isn't a one BR or studio apt...)

Hopefully the cops will get off their A's and help you out on this, esp if you have a good idea who's done it. Unfortunately cops seem generally useless when it comes to this. They don't want to do anything about it, and even seem annoyed you've come to them (been my experience w/ my cars, and dealing with several diff police dpts, so it doesn't seem isolated.)
