The single speed setup is MUCH stronger IMO. You just have to look at the design.
It's amazing to me just how much the smaller tires spin. This does relieve the drivetrain of alot of stress.
With larger tires that grip, that stress is much greater.

Some updates on this setup.
The clicking sound was due to me using too long a screws in the slipper. When I would gag it and make the slipper slip, the screws were gouging the other side of the slipper. Ooops.
I installed a new single speed tranny that I had and continued to change the setup.
After all the shock carnage repair, I changed the gearing again and put the stock tires back on.
I then changed the gearing on the medusa 36-60-1500kv to 22/40. Works great!
Then I decided to get creative with a Mamba Max. I built a little cooling house for it. LOL
I wanted to install a thermistor on the heat sink for fan operation, but couldn't find one that would work, so the fan runs all the time. Heated air exits through holes drilled in the ends of the casing.
I figured it would give some protection also.
A Novak 2700uf cap was added to the power leads as well as a CC UBEC.
This setup runs great. The motor stays cool and the ESC does too.
The 10,000mah 10C 4S setup gives an hour runtime.
