Hitting objects? I've thought about that too. So, on each side of the mower deck, a guide wheel shall be mounted in such a way, it will hold the rotating blades at, oh let's say, 1/2" distance on the sides.

Built like this, the only way you're going to hit something is head on. You could actually oversteer a little, and still do a beautiful job trimming along edges.

Ran without a body on the truck, this can be built to pin in place on the body posts. Easily removeable.
