That sounds right.... do the front tires balloon up big when you gas it? Probably not anything stripped as you said it sounded normal..... could be tires slipping, but i think you'd notice the loss of traction.

usually when the front tires are spinning, you can tell because it's hard to control. just wants to go in a straight line.

Also your pinion grub screw could be loose, allowing the motor to rotate inside the pinion, making the car not take off as hard because the motor's shaft is spinning inside the pinion.
