Well, from what I understand, once you own a copy of something, it is NOT illegal (aka, it IS LEGAL) to download it, because you are obtaining something for which you already have the rights to in another form.

So if you own a DVD of say, The Dark Knight, and you go and torrent a copy of it, that is legal because you are just obtaining something you already have in a different format (aka, in a WMV rather than DVD).

However, if you go and download Transformers and do not own any (legal) copy of it, that is illegal.

So theoretically if you bought it iTunes song you can download the same song without risk.
