Today i found that my kia sportage has a 5th gear... it only shifts into 5th at 90mph and Wot.. that was a new one for me

if thats the case you may wanna check your tranny fluid (can never tell when these kids are joking)

Yes, check 'something'.... pretty sure it should shift into 5th in normal driving.

If the rpms rise after the "shift" you have dropped a gear, if the decrease, but not much, the torque converter is locking up. A locked converter gives better mileage, but you loose the viscous torque multiplying effect.

A black guy in a korean car, sounds like a good start to a joke...
