Here's one of my favorite quotation when I was in college taking up Mech'l engineering:

"Neccessity is the mother of all invention."

This was attributed to Plato who stated, "Necessity, who is the mother of invention.

I used to piss off my professors when I said, "Desparation, not necessity is the mother of invention" .
