As a non US Citizen living (legally) in America I've been advised since I came here 5 years ago to carry at all times ID that shows I'm allowed to be in the US ligitimately...

Makes sense to me. Like How I have to carry similar when in other countries.

As long as citizens don't mind being treated as an illegal if they are stopped by police and do not have sufficient proof of citizenship.

Last time I was stopped I was asked for identification.
