would I be happy if I expected a like new lipo and received this? No

would I run it and just keep an eye on it if it were mine? Absolutely

The voltmeter tells us if a cell has been compromised. If that "tear" affected the cell in any way it would lose voltage and not be comparable to the others.

I'm surprised that even on RCM there is so much fear based paranoia about lipos. Wrap that puppy with electric tape and let 'er buck.

Me too Harold. Gee If that were mine I would not hesitate to use it, and use it hard. Otherwise whats the point in spending that kind of $$$ on Lipos. Like stated as long as it is still balanced with the other cells no worries. I would just have patched up the damaged area, wrapped it up in more heatshrink or even put the pack into some kind of home made hard case and put her to work.

Whatever the deal was is between Gee and the other guy. If your charging your Lipos in your house without some kind of fire protection, than shame on you anyway. And I don't just mean a fire extinguisher either. Charging any Lipo comes with its own hazards and should not be taken lightly. Charging Lipos should not even be done inside your home without some kind of fireproof enclosure to protect your house from smoke and fire damage. One of the best and cheapest ways that I have seen is converting an old gutted grill into a charging station with an exhaust vent over it in order to remove any smoke from the area.

If there is even minor damage to any of the cells, than patch it up properly and watch it a little bit more closely and move on. Getting all hysterical and panicing over damage that little is just rediculous.

As for selling old Lipos as long as the factual status of the battery pack was disclosed up front no harm no foul. When we purchase items second hand on here or Ebay or whatever we usually require photos of the item before closing a deal. If there is any kind of flaws that were not disclosed up front then a refund is in order. Buying anything second hand is risky, and me personally I would never buy batteries or any kind of electronics second hand. Its just not worth the risk, but thats just me.

Well let me say this before I even begin. Gee has been nothing but a true pleasure to deal with. So good in fact, I didnt want to even get his name involved. I was just wanting to make sure itd be safe to run as I am rather inexperienced when it comes to Lipos. All my self proclaimed "expertise" lies with 2 stroke gasoline engines

Experts. - 03.29.2011, 09:14 AM

Well lets face it how many experts do we really have in here as far as Lipos are concerned? Its been a huge learning curve for all of us and the technology is still evolving. If it were just a AA battery I would say chuck it, but we are talking about batteries that cost a lot of money. There may be a few guys in here who can afford to just throw part of their investments into the trash, but I surely am not one of those guys. Lipos are like any other chemical product in that they carry an inherent hazard with them that must be respected to the best of our ability. If there is chemicals coming out of a cell, than I would consider it a pretty good idea to avoid using it. If not patch it up and charge it. See if there are any issues with it, and go easy until you gain the confidence that the pack is a solid bet. Pretty basic if you ask me.

Careful Jerry2know BBQ grills are not intended to be used for that purpose. I'll test that sucker Gee. I thought alum Hvac tape was made for patching holes in lipos? I stopped balancing every charge after I got a cell spy, I store at 4.2v at all temps and I don't use a lipo sack for charging. I feel I have become somewhat relaxed with the use of lipos.

Funny. I run just about everything larger than a tmaxx on 6s, so I have a few setups that it could power.

I would remove that one possibly bad cell and have a 5s pack. It's on the end, so it should be easy to remove. But since it looks like it's on the negative side, it will require a little work on the balancer plug, but that's no biggie.

Just my $0.02...
