4gb is plenty as long as you plan on only saving your games and not downloading movies or anything lol. My Xbox 360 has no harddrive at all and only a 250mb memory card, it has lasted me 4 years and several map updates on Halo and various other games and is not full yet.

Built Ford tough, with Chevy stuff.

I don't have a modern console myself but there is an Xbox 360 in the house that I use from time to time and I have played them all with friends or family, the Wii was not cutting edge technically even when it was released but that puts it at a lower price point than the others, and good gameplay has nothing to do with graphics, my whole family has had fun playing Wii at xmass from little kids to 89 year old grandma, not something I have seen the other consoles do, but that is probably the choice of software rather than the console, although there is a lot more of that broad ranging software available for the Wii.

Graphically the Wii is easily at the bottom and the PS3 and Xbox vary depending on software, the PS3 has the better hardware but most software is developed by third parties to be cross platform and these titles will look pretty similar on either with an edge going to one or the other randomly, there are however titles that were either developed exclusively for one console or developed for one and ported to the other and they look much better on the developed console with those developed for PS3 looking better on a PS3 than those developed for Xbox do on an Xbox, but there are many many more developed for Xbox than there are for PS3.

I wouldn't get a basic one I think a hard drive is nescisary, while they can play games fine without it the loading times for the game and between levels are MUCH quicker if you install the game, also disc drives especially the Xbox one aren't known for there reliability and its normally what breaks in consoles, so the less use you can put it through the longer it will last.

Only look at your age group now, as there will be better new consoles out by the time your kids are old enough for shooting games.

Personally I game on a PC which looks much better than any current console, but then I spent more on my graphics card alone than a basic Xbox or PS3 would cost.
