Neu 1512, 2.5D, 2050kv motor in a Maxx? - 01.12.2013, 02:58 PM

I've been offered a Neu 1512, 2.5D, 2050kv motor and was hoping to use it in my Maxx truck.

I currently run a Hobbywing XeRun 4274SD, 2000kv motor and matching Hobbywing 150A ESC.

Will the Neu 1512 motor be a good match for my truck (powerful enough), or would a Neu 1515 series motor be better suited?

It would work fine. Most do run the 1515, but basic rules apply anytime you change a setup. Gear for a realistic speed, like around 40-45mph, and check temps often during initial runs. Your temps will dictate whether you are over geared or not.

The neu is a better manufactured motor, but honestly your current motor is as powerful or more powerful than the neu. It would be a more expensive motor, but not really any better performing.

It will work, if you want to try a neu get it, but you've got a good set up.

That's a pretty equal match.

I'd take a neu 1515 over the hobby wing any day.

Power wise the 1515 probably has a slight edge, but very slight.

The neu will definitely be more efficient, giving you slightly longer runtimes, running a little cooler and getting away with a wider range of gearing.

An additional advantage is being able to send it to neu for repairs should a failure ever occur, with the hobby wing you're just out a motor.

If you're looking for more power a neu 1521 or a castle/neu 1717 are the next step up.

BTW; Seems like CC only sells the 1512 and 1515 now and so no motors with a kv spec of less than 2200. Do you know why?

They're simply the most popular motors they sell. They did limited edition runs of a lower kv 1512, a 1518, a 1520 and the 1717. I guess they didn't sell enough to produce more?

Occasionally you can find the 1518, 1520 and green 1717 on ebay. The black 1717 out of the xo-1 is available on ebay.

I have a 1050/kv neu 1521 I'm considering selling.

But I don't know if you could handle that much power.

Thank you for the kind offer on the 1521 motor. Seems like it will be bit difficult to gear on my truck even running on 6S. Also, wouldn't such a powerful motor be very hard on the batteries and ESC, i.e. pulling too much current?

It's a beast alright. I forgot you are running a transmission. I use this motor on 4s and 8s with a mamba xl in an e-maxx with a center diff. I always planned on someday running 12s and breaking 100mph.

I'm thinking of downgrading to a 1515. I believe a 1515 (or similar motor like your 4274) on 6s is plenty of power. My very heavy savage with a 1717 is usually only run on 4s, and it is plenty.

I've done big and powerful and to me anything over 50mph is getting to where you just do speed runs. At 50 r/c's are out of sight within a few seconds. A 1515 is plenty to do 50 and you have the torque to wheelie the whole way there.

Do you think your setup is not powerful enough, or are you just considering your options?

I like my setup but didn't want to miss a good deal on a Neu motor if it was a good match for my truck. I think I'll wait for a 1515 motor to show up then.

I agree with your points on speed. I generally go for ~45 mph - seems like a good top speed where I still have control of the truck.

I have a spare Neu 1512 2.5D I'd be willing to part with. I made end covers for the front/rear holes (prevents dirt from entering).

I picked up a Castle 1717 on ebay for about $160 new. Good deal. I swapped the 1515 that was in there for 1717.

Before on 6S, it was just too crazy, and the 1515 didn't like it, ran hot even with small gearing. Was also way too fast and useless for anything but speed runs.

Now, I run the 1717 with 15/48 gearing on my CRT on 6S and its PLENTY fast enough. Haven't clocked it but the calculators say I should be looking at about 65mph or so. Its nice because there is torque all over the place now, plenty fast, and on 6S runs nice n' cool all the time. Batteries like it more too.

I run twin 3S 5000mah packs in series. thinking of switching out to twin 6S 3000/3300mah packs in Series. A little more weight, but since I bash mostly the runtime increase will be appreciated.
