If you cut them to short you can break wires, longer wire allow some flex. If you install connectors on rear endcap and solder windings directly from inside then it would look like Lehner :)

You need to keep wires as short as possible, but it is much easier to do that with ESC-side wires. But if things like mentioned above happened and you facing phase wire bundle which you cannot solder with regular flux because of coating then you need to be very patient and strip every wire in winding bundle (one of 3).
