Tabletop Mills and lathes

I've been looking at getting a mill/lathe combo. I could use just a small mill and do without the lathe but I haven't seen any small mills by themselves. I was wondering what everyone uses to make their own stuff from mills and lathes. I've been doing the dremel thing for awhile now but want something nicer. I'm trying to stay under $500. Suggestions please.
