I did. Always do with a new rx and or radio. I like to make sure the settings are read by the esc properly and all that since I'm not familiar with it all. I may just put the rx in my jato to see how it responds in there. If that just takes off, i really don't care as much. it's what i got it for! LOL, but my maxxes are not cheap to repair like the jato....
