Another potential reason is not having the steering endpoints set properly. If the servo is turning further than the vehicle can have its wheels turn, then this is putting extra stress on the servo and its gears. If you're using a digital radio, you can change the endpoints via EPA. If you're using a cheap AM radio, then it might be time to upgrade to a digital one.
