E-Maxx BL conversion. Easiest option?

Novak is easiest, as it's drop in... and uses standard 1/8" pinions.

Most other brushless motors suited for a maxx use 5mm pinions...

But there are a few out there with 1/8 shafts like the Lehner Basic XLs... which would be much better than a Novak when paired with a MambaMax, for about the same price.

And you CAN get 32p pinions to fit the Feigao etc 5mmm motors.

So I would recomend a Feigao L or XL and a MM for under $250

No fabbing needs to be done with the 'non-novak' systems... the unused motor hole is just covered up with tape, etc.

What is the difference between the L and XL? And there are two different XL's. A 540C XL (Looks like it has a built in Heat Sink), and smooth 540 XL's. I assume a 8 or 9 X or XL is what I want but don't know which one to get. Maybe I should just e-mail customer support.:027:

Its the length of the motor arm and can. L is long and XL is... guess. :)

Generally XL are used as the L cans tend to run hot in large vehicles. 9Ls used to be pretty standard, but now its moves on to XLs for more reliability.

Turns? Depends on what you are going after. Is speed or runtime more important? 7XLs will be fastest,, but run hotter and for less time, 9Xls have long runtimes, but are not as fast, and a 8XL is a good balance of the two.
7XL: mid 40s mph likely
8Xl: low 40s
9Xl: hi 30s-40mph

Rough guestimate which will depend on your batteries, vehicle/tire weight etc of course, but you get the idea.

So, based on what you just said, I should probably get an 8XL or 9XL. Although they are out of 8XL's. Also, what is the difference between the 540C and the 540? Both are offered in 8XL. One has a heat sink but the motor itself looks completely different.

Non-novak systems are not really complicated, and will give you much better performance for the $. The only real difference with a Non-novak is that you need either a Rx pack or external BEC as running the ones built in are meant for lower voltages. You can use the empty motor space to mount such a thing there.

The add. upside is you have a huge range of options in motor choice, however a Mamba Max ran on 14 cells or 4S with a feigao 7XL or 8Xl is a hard combo to beat, and will destroy a novak system in performance.

i would also take the opportunity to also upgrade to a Strobe slipper (you'll kill the stocker) with a much tougher Mod1 pitch spur. Mike has mod1 5mm pinions as well.
