Hey Tex
Sorry to hear of your troubles, you are not alone. I hate shaving with a burning passion! I have similar trouble, and the best thing I have found is to wash may hair and face in hot water while showering with shampoo, gets the hair nice and soft. Then I use a Mach 3 and make sure the blade is changed as soon as the moisturizer strip is gone. In winter when it gets me the worst I use the Neutrogena aftershave. So far this is the best solution I have found.
Hope you find something that works for you, cause a raw face all day sucks!

I can get away without shaving for a few days- very 'fair-haired' as it were on my face, only get a few thicker dark hairs on my top lip & under my chin(s). I currently use a cheapy 2 blade disposable razor, but they are all getting blunt so will be venturing to get something new soon. I dont like to buy the decent razors as they cost about £6-8 for a razor with one head, and another £6-10 for a pack of 3 or 4 replacement heads; insane. I only really have issues shaving my neck though as like alot of you guys the skin there doesnt seem to be very smooth & is also seemingly quite thin and sensitive- dont get a rash so much, just difficult to shave without bleeding or ending up red-raw afterwards. I'll have to see whats a reasonable price down my local Boots chemist or up the local Sainsbury's etc.
Veet/ nair is awesome stuff, but the trouble is hair grows back = stubble > itchy knackers....

I can't stand the electrics - they rash me up something horrible. And I ruled out after shaves a long time ago - they are worse than anything on my skin. This may have as much to do with when you shave. Have you tried it at different times (in the shower/right after shower/at night/in the am)?
How about waxing the top of your head? (Keep in mind, I know nothing about being bald.....!!)

I usually shave after a hot shower (never liked anything but hot showers, gets the "grime" off, plus the hooker smells, and body glitter than transfers). it does not work as well, cause your skin will be puffy and the razor will not get the hairs cut off all the way down. I have to shave in multiple different directions, as the hair seems to grow differently in different places.
I use a mach 3 with the cheapest refill that they sell, and gilette shaving gel. Clean my face with soap and hot water afterwards, and then splash cold water on my face to finish.

Shaving during or after a shower usually softens the hair some so is less irritating. My wife has had the electrolisis done on her armpits and said it irritated at the time of treatment but that soon subsides, and she didn't get any pussy stuff as previously mentioned. I heard a few years back Micheal Schumacher got his face done. It might seem expensive for what it is but you'll save time and money on shaving. Just might have to inquire if it will affect sensitive skin.

I'm surprised no one has suggested this, but I bet using a really nice straight razor would do the trick. It also doubles the size of your balls.

The electrolysis or even newer laser treatments sound interesting, just a lot of cash to fork out at once.
Not doing nair, tried that stuff, not good for sensitive skin or near eyes etc.
I shave in the shower with a fog free mirror and use nivea shave cream for sensitive skin. I have tried some after shave treatments but many seem to worsen the break outs.
I like a straight razor shave but I have not the balls to do it to myself and getting them done is expensive. We have a place here in Houston called roosters that does a rather nice job and is setup more like an old fashioned barber shop.
I am with you linc on the hot showers, plus it is more relaxing. I have recently gone back to showering at night which I like better because it helps me sleep better.

Have you tried skin repair creams as aftershave, since your skin is obviously having a reaction to the chemicals used. My daughter has eczma and we keep her away from soaps etc... that have SLS (sodium laurel sulphates I think !?).

I have sensitive skin on my neck, like a lot of you, which is why I only shave every 3-4 days to avoid horrible breakouts/irritation. I happen to have very oily skin, too, so that's a double-edge sword. If I do shave everyday it leaves the pores open and causes breakouts. I have tried shaving every day using a brand new blade (VERY expensive) and that didnt help.
I'm currently running a Gillette Fusion with Noxzema shave cream. I get ~10 minutes of runtime per charge and the razor will last for ~10 cycles.

A bit more material for you Neil...
Tex, during or immediately after a hot shower...hold/pull the skin tight & use long strokes, not short scratchy ones. Go with the grain, then against. Rinse with warm/hot water, then you're done

doesn't going against the grain cause ingrown hairs?
i shaved against the grain....once...i ended up having dozens of ingrown hairs that i had to get rid of one-by-one.
my neck and jaw area break out pretty bad when i shave and there really isn't any pain or rash, but instead, acne and a lot of itchiness. i've cut down to twice a week because of this and it helps a little.
They say a good mechanic only needs 2 tools - WD40 & Duct tape. If it moves, and its not supposed to, duct tape. If it doesn't move, and its supposed to, WD40.

I am careful what goes on my face because I have rosacea as well. The shave cream I use was recommended by my dermatologist as being free of everything unnecessary.
I have three different creams I put on for the rosacea depending on how bad it is and an antibiotic. One cream goes on no matter what, one is for flare ups, and the other is a steroid for when it gets really bad. So in keeping with the shaving deal I have to keep the other in mind as well.

I can understand now why laser treatment is attractive for you. Needless to say you've got some studying to do on the subject. I would hate to think it has adverse affects. Hope it turns out for the better Tex :)
