it's my gut feeling that an L can motor as opposed to an XL in a 10-11 lb plus truggy application is risky business at best...

if some folks have had good results running 1512 cans in lighter 8 buggies, more power to them...

i'm sure those people have a good handle on dialing in thier trucks for optimum performance...

i'm almost ready [waiting on new cells] to test my 8-T and i'm going to try the following motors...

1515 1YF [2200 kv] 4s
1521 1YF [1577 kv] 5s & maybe 6s
1521 1.5DF [1860 kv] 4s and maybe 5s

i have a good deal of experience running Neu motors in boats and i realize that may or may not be of any help in my truggy endevours but that's my plan based on a educated guess...

Regards,

Ron

In a truggy, I would go with a 1515. A buggy needs only a 1512 and even then it's pretty crazy power and speed, while maintaining very good temps.

and i bow to your experience Brian...

you are most likely right on...

but i already own these motors and have to go thru the motions [trying all three] to feel good about testing:026:

Ron, it depends on what you want the motor to do too. The 1512 has enough power to push the truggy around and it is running far cooler than the Feigao did.

I don't think it's fair to compare a 1512 to an L can motor. I would be running an L can. They do have the power to push the truck around with authority. The drawback is that they get HOT. The setup with the Neu motor doesn't get hot at all. After running for 30 minutes, the motor temped at 160 and the esc temped at 130.

My purpose in going with the 1512 was to drop weight and extend runtime so that I could go with a smaller battery pack. This I accomplished. The 8ight T is much more nimble on the track.

I took the truck out today and dropped the gearing a tooth. I went geared 16/46 and the temps were good. Again, the raw power of the 9XL wasn't there, but it was fast enough for the track. Nothing awe inspiring, but solid performance. I still feel like I'd like a bit more though. I emailed Neu and told them that I do want to swap motors. I'll await a response and see what happens. If it's too late, I think that I could live with the 1.5Y as it is.

Since you already have the 1515/1Y, I'd go with that. It'll be more than enough motor.

Hi I just started to convert my 8ight t to brushless and I'm using a BK9920 Feigao 8XL dean plugs and going to buy Hyperion or flightpower batts.

But do you use Mike's motormount or your own?

I'm using my own motor mount that I made from 7075 aluminum. I also have one of Mike's mounts and it's pretty nice. You can't go wrong with Mike's mount and it makes things a lot easier.

As for the motor, I really prefer the 9XL just because of the heat. The 9XL will get hot too, but not nearly as quickly as the 8XL. Of course, the ambient temperature in your part of the world will make a difference too. If it is cooler where you are, the 8XL might do nicely. It's around 100*F where I am, so the 9XL is what I would run.

If you have the financial resources, I'd go with a Neu 1515/2.5d. On 4S lipo geared at 16/48, is would be formidable on the track. On 5S, it's a beast. On 5S, I clocked my 8ight T at 50 mph with Proline badlands tires geared 18/48.

final set-up - 09.10.2007, 02:22 PM

i went with this set-up in my 8T and couldn't be more pleased with our track tests...

Losi 8T race roller chassis
Neu 1515 1Y/F motor
rc-monster motor mount
14 tooth [HS] mod1 pinion/stock spur
F7000/C30,000/R5000 wt. dif. oil
Schulze 40.160 v14 series control DIP brake, no reverse, med. timing
Li-Saver LVC
4s-2p NeuEnergy [30-60C] 8200 mAh lipo
misc. spring/shock/suspension tuning

temps are pleasingly low run time excellent and as long as the track is damp she hooks-up like a big dog!

thanks to the input from forum members and Mike C. my first truggy conversion was painless and fun...
