strange lipo behavior - 02.28.2008, 11:16 PM

I got a couple 3s 3800 mAh packs, and it first started charging to 3100 mAh. This is from charging 9.3-9.8v to 12.42v. 30 cycles later it has been dropping in final charge capacity every cycle. Now it is charging to 2200 mAh, got any ideas? I'd hate for a $200 set of packs to go in only 50 cycles

How are you storing the packs when not in use? Storing them empty can cause a limited charge.

Are you using a balancer?

They are those dang ol' Apogee magnum packs. And I haven't stored them for more than about 2-3 weeks. But when they're sitting there, they're at 9.3v-10v ready to be charged. They are also balanced every 5 cycles or so.

If you are storing them for any length of time (more than a couple days) at less than 10v, that may be the problem. I always put a storage charge on mine after they cool down; or at least within a day or two. I have several packs that I have been running for over a year with no apparent loss of capacity.

What are you running these in? What kind of temps on them after a run? If the battery is undersized for the application, that will also cause problems.

Ran them in a VXL/Mamba Rustler for the first 20 cycles, then in the Revo. Usually 75-100 degrees after the run.
