Can I make anything cool out of this? - 05.17.2008, 01:36 PM

I have this dvd player chip that has been laying around for awhile and I am wondering if I can make anything out of it.

Well, you could make a DVD player.

I usually just strip parts off that I know I may use in the future, like the RCA jacks.

Check out hackaday.com for some ideas...

that sounds fun!

If you really think that will work, tell me how. I just built a metered propane spudgun a couple months ago from something I saw on the internet. Range is 500+ feet

I need something to do on some boring days

a while back I was really ino making potatoe guns all the parts you could get at home depot, I never wanted to spend that much on the gun to go to propane, I used different propellents, I found Right Guard and the orange engine degreaser (the active ingredient is similar to gun powder) to be my favs) I had one model that the 2nd half of the barrel was chocked down to accpect a small red potatoe, and since the projectile is smaller and increased the compression it improved the performance. The key was not to put too much propellent in the combustion chamber you wanted to get the ratio in a happy zone and I used a BBQ lighter for ignition.
I brought one to work one time and I got a bunch of guys into it and they wernt the most mechanical of people so I would make them for a price. I have seen some crazy designs on the net, you can also make rockets out of PVC pipe fo rthem

If you have the little laser part of the DVD player, you can make a laser pointer to aim your potato/laser/chain gun . There's how-to's all over Youtube. I want to try and take apart an old CD drive and use that, though I haven't tried yet.

The barrell has gotten twice as long since to get the optimum .8:1 C:B ratio. It is 8' long now.

I found the laser in the dvd parts pile, but it is in pieces. I'll put on some pics when I get home.

I was never brave enough to use propane in my spud gun...I always used Aqua Net red hair spray.

My buddy and I would have killed ourselves with propane...

...and no I never shot any chickens...
