Talking Got me an ofna buggy - 09.16.2005, 08:51 PM

I want to know what is involved with a conversion. I have read a couple articles on them. It is not in bad shape but could be better. I will take suggestion. I would like to go brushless. I don't care for nitro. I will have to ebay some nitro items now. MO money for project. :D Can someone tell me to what type this is? I will look to try and find. I don't know alot about a buggy yet. Willing to learn though.

Looks like the MBX - good news :) It uses the diff that accepts plastic spurs with no modification.
First, get the nylon/plastic spur that Mike sells here (51T). Then get a couple small pinions to work with.
Next, it's time to start hacking away all the stuff that's in the way of electronics. Maybe figure out a way to get the steering servo out of the way, too.
I have a buggy just like it that will be a winter project for me. I'll have about 6 months+ to get it ready for next year, so I'm in no rush to start.
My current plan is to run 4s2p lipo with an MGM 12012 and Feigao 8L. I may end up with a different motor, but we'll see. I'm building it to compete with nitro next season. One thing I plan on doing is putting my center diff on it's side (similar to the way I did my MGT) and raising it a little to use the OFNA 65T nylon spur. Lastly, I'd like to end up using Gorilla Maxx battery straps to hold down the lipo packs, so they'll most likely end up over the rock guards on both sides.
Considering I'm not working on mine for about a month or so, I'll expect you to get ahead of me ;)
We can learn off of each other on this project.

Best of luck, of course - and I'll go check mine out again to start getting some more ideas for you.

:)

I notice that to. How do you tell between the 9.5 and regular mbx? It is a little dirty. Have to take the stuff off any way. I can clean it up then.

Batfish - the 8L is not the motor for a 1/8 buggy. If you really want to run one, use 3s Lipo, and not 4s (I have found my 8L to heat up too much on 4s Lipo, but felt good on 3s).

coolhandcountry - Have you seen my buggy? (It's under the electric section). Right now I am basically re-converting it (for the third time!). I have a custom chassis made, that will be VERY strong, and I am making a VERY strong motor mount. I am not using a center diff, but a custom slipper based off the Revo slipper. So, that means that I am working with a completely custom design. Whatever you do, make sure that it suits you.

That buggy isn't a 9.5 MBX, since the 9.5 MBX comes with orange anodized parts. Also, the front chassis brace orientation is different.
It's not the Ultra MBX, because the Ultra MBX has a different upper deck design. It's not the Ultra MBX Pro for the same reason.
It's not the Ultra MBX R2 because the upper deck is different.
It's not the Ultra LX Pro for the same reason.
That leaves it to be ONLY the Ultra LX Comp. This buggy is compatible with the plastic differential gear.

In case you are wondering how I figured this out, I went to Ofna's website and went through the PDF files of exploded views of all of the buggies I knew of that could possibly look like the picture you posted.

Right on! I would use a 7xl, cheap, torquey, and versatile. The ability to run 12-18 cells and 4s-5s lipo will be great and you can make it a truggy. You can use a hacked E-Maxx motor plate to mount on the brake system or machine your own plate. Cold Fusion also has a universal motor mount plate for 1/8 conversions.

I have a 14 L and when i get my lehner I will have a 9xl. It will take the high gearing from the center diff better. Thanks alot there metal man for your research. I don't have lipos. I was thinking of 14 cells. I have to keep you posted as project comes along. OH! Yes i have seen your clean buggy. It made me want to do one. YOu and dabid are to blame for this. JK :) Thank everyone.

The 8L is not the ideal motor, no - but it's the one I already have, and it powered my Hyper 7 conversion and the MGT for a while. It definitely works, but doesn't fit into the conventional wisdom of the right motor for the right job. I figure 4s may be too much for it, and I do also have 3s to work with, and I know neither may be good with the 8L as a permanent solution for the buggy, which is why I said I may end up with a different motor.
I try to use what I have first and post relevant information for others to use and learn from. :)

It's definitely in the "Ultra" series, and it does look like a cross between the LX and MBX.
I have an Ultra MBX Pro and the only differences I can see in coolhandcountry's picture is that his has a lay-down steering servo and the pillow ball suspension. The lay-down servo is standard on the LX while PBS is standard on a couple of the MBX models (not mine).
Either way, most parts will be swappable :)

Dude, that pic is bugging me, don't know what chassis that is. It looks close to a Ultra LX Pro though, maybe some other Ultra version? The laydown steering servo is what gets me........:W:

Is the older version different. I am not sure how old it is. It may be an orginal. I have took the motor off now. Would another pic or differnet angle help? Is a mb nitro motor supposed to be good? That is what came off it.

The motor has a s7 on the side.

You mean RB? The RB S7 is a great nitro motor. Among my favorites.

Did you see my post David? I did all that research lol! If it is not an Ultra LX Comp, then it is some older buggy that Ofna has no manual for on their website.
