I'm having trouble removing the pinion from my 9XL. I believe it's one of the pinions Mike sells. Unfortunately, because it won't come off, I can't remove the motor from the motor mount on the E-Maxx 3905 tranny. Do you guys have any ideas on how to remove it without bending the motor shaft?
theres a device called a pinion puller. but i had the same problem and i just put a screwdriver (the shaft) on the left and right side of the pinion (underneath it of course) and i just yanked on the screwdriver and it came off.
I had the same problem on a 9L on my Rustler I pretty much did what BB8 suggested I never had to use heat, if you use heat apply only on the pinion and it should loosen up
Depending on why they are stuck just use a bit of heat from a heat gun. Mine are normally stuck due to loctite and you just have to heat the pinion a little bit and she will pop right off. The motor will only get a little warm if you direct the heat at the pinion.
happened to me, as i forced it on there and didnt ever use a pinion set screw, but when i tried to get it off i couldnt... got it off eventually by gripping another bit of the shaft with pliers and levering off with a screwdriver as mentioned above.... took me about 10 minutes to get it off but once i figured it out its easy :)

If you can get the set screw from the pinion, run it without the set screw and the torque should get it loose.
Actually, I've been running it for a week or two without the set screw in. It's pretty well stuck on there. I'll try prying like a couple guys have suggested.
try my method that i posted up above...you just grip the motor with your left hand, and grip the shafts of the screwdrivers with your right hand using your index and middle finger. sorta making a claw with them two fingers but upside down and just yank it upwards. try heating the sucker up with the strongest soldering iron you got first too.
A big screwdriver and pry it off with some leverage, always pry close to the shaft. Sometimes I use the little flat open end traxxas wrenches to wedge in around the motor shaft and pry to get the pinion moving.
If it is running without the set screws, it is on there pretty good. I think heat and a gear puller is the best answer - any hardware store will likely have a small gear puller that would work. Next time, you may go a little lighter on the threadlock (only a little dab on the set screw is needed - blue loctitie). :)
I had the same issue with my XL motor. I used two large flat head screw drivers. Place 'em behind the the gear on either side of the shaft and then rotate the screwdrivers together so the flat heads are hitting the inside of the gear (near the shaft).
The flat head will push the gear outwards off the motor shaft, and you don't have to worry about prying on your motor shaft and risk bending anything. Mine slide right off.
