How fast are the VXLs really are? - 06.11.2008, 12:13 AM

Many people have been raving about the VXLs on 3s. I'm running the Novak HV 4.5 with 4s in my stampede and i do find it ok. Not fast enough but also not too slow.

Now... How much faster is the Novak HV 4.5 running on 4s compared to the VXL on 3s? Given two identical vehicles. On paper the novak should be faster shouldn't?

Well going by Novak's website the HV4.5 is 5000KV ( http://www.teamnovak.com/products/br...spec_chart.htm ) and the VXL is 3500KV

Depends on gearing....IMO a vxl could probablly be geared for higher speeds than the Novak, I didn't have good luck with mine in an E-REVO conversion. Using the speed calculator my vxl rustler should be doing between 40 and 45MPH on 2S LiPo. I won't completely diss the Novak setup but I would try using the VXL ESC as it is capable of running a sensored motor, I found the Novak ESC to be the weak link, however this would limit you to 3S. My HV-4.5 was 4400kv so if thats wrong correct me but using stock gearing in a rustler that would be 75MPH adjusted speed, drop the spur down and ur looking at 80+ easily which IMO is just silly!:-)

andy85: what gearing are you running and do you know what speeds you are getting? Vxl stampedes are just silly fast on 3s but I would be surprised if your HV4.5 could not reach the same speeds if geared right.

FWIW in the case of my HV6.5 I found that motor ran its best (smoothest and fastest) when used with the novak hvmaxx esc. I tried it with the vxl-3s both un/sensored, mamba max unsensored, and mgm 16018 unsensored. Of those 3 I thought it was better on the MM (which ran cooler then the novak) but not as smooth or fast... go figure.

i'm running 83t spur, 28t pinion & stock tyres.. i dont have radar gun so i cant really get the exact speed but my guess would by 55-60mph

Batteries i'm running are cheap 4000mah protek lipos (because i wouldnt think novak would handle high quality lipos anyway).

So now i'm thinking again.... its prob my batts. Didnt think i was going to run my pede so often so went and got cheap proteks =[ i shoulda stuck to good old NeuEnergy =]

it does sound loke your batteries are your weak link, I would go with an Enerland based pack, I started with a stock VXL and I have upgraded to a CC MM, Feigao 9L, with MOD 1 gearing my present setup is in my sig and It is plenty fast I estimate my top speed around 70 mph and my run times are in excess of 30 mins of mostly WOT

I have ran both systems in my Stampede(exteneded and widened). They can be geared so that on 3s they hit similar top speed(67mph if you can keep the front end down.) I have never been close to full throttle on 4s,it simply will not do it,at about 60 I always get lift off.The novak will destroy the vxl if on 4s,actually always. The novak will run cooler, give more gearing options, and better control,in the Pede no matter what gearing.

VXL ESC as it is capable of running a sensored motor,
Mine will not run the 4.5 sensored.

I ran my TC3 Truggy today (The power was out here in NJ due to the storm we had last night ). I'm using the HV4.5 motor with the Hobbywing Zerun 120A ESC (With the sensor plugged in) and I ran it with 3S and it was fast. I do have the VXL3s controller and it burned my other HV4.5 motor. I'm not sure if the motor was bad, but my MGM 8012 ran it fine so it couldn't be the motor. The VXL3s didn't work good even if the sensor wire was plugged. It might be a defective unit, but it runs a motor fine with no load.

I don't believe that the brand of cells makes that much of a difference, as I have tried both a cheap chinese 3800mAh 20C 4S & a Maxamps 6000mAh 20C 4S, back to back, & the only difference was very slightly lower on initial punch with the 3800 (due to available amps.) & run time was longer with the 6000 (obviously). Top speed was the same in a converted Revo with stock gearing & a X1-CRT with stock gearing.

So, I don't see what could've been wrong with you batts to make that much of a difference.

Either way, they're still faster than nitro!!!

#1...good luck getting a stampede over 60mph.....there just not stable enough to go that fast...the vxl on 3s will easily get you to 70+ in a rustler or bandit with the right gearing

now take that velinion motor and pair it with a mm on 4s, right gears and tires that will hold up and you will do over 80mph
