MMM: Fan activation temp? - 08.22.2009, 11:31 PM

At what temp does the fan activate on the Mamba Monster? I just read in the RC Car Action 2009 Buyers Guide that it turns on at 150F. Is this correct?

The reason I ask is because my fan has been turning on intermittently during my runs and I thought nothing of it. With my IR temp gun I was only getting readings of 120F external and I thought it was normal for the fan to come on. That's what it's there for right? I know internally the temps would be a bit more than outside on the case but I didn't realize it would be 30F difference.

I don't like that my internal temp is getting up to 150F or more, especially since my brushless E-revo is only geared for about 33mph and I'm a pretty conservative driver. I wouldn't expect Castle to set the fan to activate when things are already way too hot, but 150F seems high to me. With my gearing and how I drive the fan really shouldn't have to turn on at all.

So any ideas here about the fan activation temp? Does the fan only activate when things are way too hot, or is it normal for the fan to run?

Yes 150 is the fan activation temp. I have seen up to 130 external with temp gun. The fan will come on intermittently in most setups, only need to worry if it is always on.

remember that there is a lot of dead space in the heatsink, there is no good way to get an accurate reading of board temperature. the female bullets exiting the controller will get you closest but still not spot on.

150 isnt to bad at all. and ive noticed the readings on the outside of the case to be 30 degrees difference or so. just remember its easier for the speedo to get warmer because its pretty enclosed

Same on my erevo and I'm geared 18/65. Maybe too low. Stop for a minute and take the lid off and it should stop spinning in a few moments.
