HV 6.5 Question -
08.27.2007, 12:00 PM
Hey guys, I just put a Novak HV 6.5 in my E-Maxx. It is fast and seems to be cool.
I just have 1 little problem.
I also just installed a new Spektrum DX 3.0 and I'm not sure if this problem is with the ESC or the radio.
When I first turn on my ESC there is a burst of throttle. I have tried adjusting things on the radio but to no avail. Right now my throttle trim is set to 26 just to keep the thing still.
But I still get a burst when I turn it on
I have been reading the manual for the Spektrum and the Novak and I can't seem to find the solution. Let me know if anyone has a tip or pointer for me.

did you reprogram the esc when you installed the new rx?

Just e-mail charlie@teamnovak.com with help with any questions or problems with Novak applications.

Personally, it sounds like a setting with the radio. On a Spektrum, when you bind the receiver to the transmitter, you have to hold the steering and throttle to the positions you want when/if the receiver loses signal (fail safe operation). When you plug in the receiver without the transmitter on first, the receiver will be in this fail safe mode until the transmitter is turned on and will force the throttle/steering to the positions you had when binding. So, even if you have the ESC programmed right, it will still do this unless you make sure your transmitter is on first.
Not sure if this is the problem in your case, but something you might want to look at.

This sounds identical to the problem I had with my HV-MAXX 4.5 & Nomadio. Are you using their lipo saver by any chance? If yes, you need to go through lipo saver setup with it--fixed my problem.

There is no Li-Po saver involved. I didn't install it because I'm just running IB 4200 6 cell packs.
I probably didn't get it setup right. If by chance I turn the receiver before the radio this thing will take off and crash into the first thing it hits and wont stop until you turn it off.
If you turn on the radio 1st it will surge for just a second. Which is a pain in the ass. But it will stop after that and be fully functional.
Maybe I should try to reprogram the receiver?ould
Could it have something to do with the fact that my throttle trim is way up on 26 just to stay still? Maybe it's just setup wrong?

You should probably reset your trim to 0, and then go through the ESC setup again.

hmmm....strange indeed. here's what i would do:
* set your dx 3.0 to the factory settings (all adjustments, trims, etc.)
* re-bind your rx to your tx
* re-program the hv system with the spektrum
you shouldn't have to set your throttle trim that high just for it to set idle. when i had my hv 6.5, i too had (have) the dx 3.0 and it worked perfectly. no blips or jumps at all. in fact, it could be that you haven't bound your rx to the tx - when set up correctly, nothing connected to the rx will work until it gets the tx signal.

You have to switch the throttle "servo" direction in the radio, or flip your diff's. It has to do with the way the motor is designed to turn for Forward/Reverse. Unfortunately for us, its backwards from the way an Emaxx is set up to run. But it still will act a little funny on you. On non-sensored motors, you can simply reverse the polarity of the power wires. But on the Novaks, you cant do that. There was a thread about this right before the server crash.
I had this same issue on my emaxx with the 4.5 and the DX3.0, and I just reversed the direction of the throttle servo on the DX 3. It acts a little funny when going from reverse to forward - it has that long pause one normally gets going from forward to reverse.
On my Revo, I ended up flipping the diffs. We'll see this weekend how that works out.

Well, I defaulted my radio and "re-bound" the receiver and it came back and did the same thing again.
Same as before. I'm going to keep messing with it but I'm not sure where to go now.
I did notice that if the esc is disconnected from the receiver it doesn't do it. Does that mean that it is a signal coming from the radio?

Its all your own fault for having a flashy expensive good quality radio, you should have bought an older out dated model like me ;) I had a problem programming my HvMaxx the first time- it would not work unless I set the throttle epa down a few notches ( adjustable pot on the tx ), after that it worked fine, no problems at all. Since you have reset everyhting, I would recommend setting the throttle down to where you say it idles maybe, then connnect it to the esc & try reprogramming it again. Hopefully the esc will recognise the radio is at 'neutral', and it wont want to go ka-ka on you every time you turn it on after reprogramming it. I think the problem you may be having is to do with the fact you can adjust the tx between 120%? and 0% on the throttle, where as the esc wants to see 100% & 0%. By pulling full throttle & gradually turning the throttle epa down whilst programming the esc it should hopefully recognise the point where 100% is. If I try to turn the throttle epa back up past 100% the esc wont function. Weird, but hopefully that info should help you.... or just confuse you.....

one other thought aside from what neil suggested - do you still have the stock radio system? or another that you could try? if the same problem exists with an analog radio system, i'd say call novak. if it goes away with another radio system, you could have something faulty with your spektrum and may want to contact them.
good luck - that's gotta be frustrating...

I'm telling ya, its related to the motor rotation direction. You need to reverse the throttle servo, and set it up from there.

I read your post last night. You may be right but if I do that my trigger will be backwards.
I don't want that.
I'd rather deal with a little surge when I turn it on.
I just don't see how doing this will fix my problem.

Well, if this fixes your lurching problem, just flip the diffs to make it go the right way.
