Not sure if you can use the velineon system, but if you keep the overall speed low you can most likely get away with it. Gearing would be 14t clutch bell and a 40t spur. This would give you about 35mph on 11.1v lipo, which would be about as much as the vxl motor can handle. A bigger clutch bell (higher top speed) will most likely cause the system to overheat. I would keep a very close eye on your motor and esc temps during the first few runs, just to be safe! You do not want to cook the motor and esc! Your lipo choice is a good one, stick with that and get away from the nimh, their excessive weight and poor power production will only cause issues. Plus you would need about 20 good 4000 nimh cells to equall the 8000 lipo, and they will weight at least 2.5 times as much.

its mainly because it is SUCH a light truck.

you do realize 70 is not a realistic speed to have fun with. its more of a speed run type of setup. i am almost positive that if you did the "70mph setup" with the rusty it would run quite hot quite fast

you would not want more than 40-45 mph in a big truck like this.

if you are going to use it for all around bashing that is...

if this is used for pure drag racing... then idk.

your going to want a HUGE spur for that, lotsa volts and a very nice motor to handle the RPMS

Well, I would go with a mamba max speed control, castle creations bec (you have to disable the mamba max internal bec to run more than 3s lipo), a feigao 9xl motor, and a maxamps (or similar) 8000mah 4s lipo. This will be a cool running system that will have long runtimes and enough power to gear for 40mph or so and not get hot. You could also use the maxamps 4s 6000 battery, but I would say to go for the 8000 as it will offer longer runtimes and is made of better cells!

The rustler does ok with the velineon sytem due to the low weight and 2wd. The motor is really too small for a larger, heavier 4wd truck. You will notice that the mm/8xl combo will not be much more expensive than the velineon system. MM go for 135 or less and you can get the 8xl for about 60-70.

You couldn't even use the Velineon motor with the Tekno kit...RC-M motor mount is the way to go...

To disable the internal bec just remove the red wire on the end of the harness that plugs into the receiver. You can also use a std 5cell receiver pack, but the cc bec is only 22bucks and never needs charging!

The mamba max esc is a great esc, especially the price! Combined with the clutch setup, 2 speed and mech brakes it will operate with low temps and great reliability! This is most likely the best cost per performance setup a beginner can buy, plus it works!
