Speed Challenge Car - 02.24.2009, 04:54 AM

Well, my LHS is orgainishing a speed challenge session somtime next month. It's a drag race style challenge between 2 cars. Loser will get eliminated. Details like the length of the track, where the drivers going to stand are not very clear. What is known is that there are no restriction to the type of vehicles that one can bring to the competition. Well, it has to have wheels & use the wheels to move around.

I have new old stock 1/8 buggy chassis lying around that I think I can convert into a GT style onroad vehicle for this speed challenge. Most of the guys will be using 1/18 scale sedans & there's even a 1/18 scale offroad truggy in the mix. I think there are some who will bring their 10th scale electric sedan to the event as well.

I have bought this shell for use on my buggy :

These Losi tires will be used on the GTfied buggy :

I have also purchased various GT parts for Kyosho to use on my NOS buggy. I am asking Mike to sell me a Lightning Stadium mount & a Kyosho mount to fit one of them into the buggy. This will be a one speed buggy. I am targeting to use a 6S lipo with 25/46 gearing & possibly a Medusa 70mm 1600KV motor. With this setup, theoretical top speed is around 82mph (132km/h). Hope this will be ok to beat the competition.

Wish me luck !

Regards,
Joe Ling

My first BL conversion. Essentially, I'll be using the exact same type of chassis for the upcoming Gt conversion.

IMO you will need more...never underestimate your competition.....I have seen a few 1/18 scale cars go in excess of 100 mph...Good luck!!

Any idea if those new Losi tires are belted like the OFNA and Ipanema tires?

Yeah, I'm hoping I can get away with the speed I hope to achieve. I really don't want to have a spend an order of magnitude more...

Not sure about the tires. I should have bought some belted ofna tires too as these were quite expensive.

Jzemaxx has a few build threads with some high speed vehicles, one being a XTM monster truck and a 1/8 scale buggy both did about 80 mph

There are a bunch of 1/8 conversions out there. I did one and so did these guys.

Good luck... IMO its gonna be hard to beat one of them little 1/10 on roads in a drag race. Those things just scoot!!! The power to weight ratio on them is insane. Just put a 3 cell lipo one with the right tires and in my opinion a little more weight than you would use for a road race to increase the traction for better acceleration and you will be all set. Tyring to make a 1/8 accelerate like the 1/10 will be tough.

If you insist on going with the 1/8 find the widest and softest tires you can get on the thing for maximum traction. Dont forget the traction compound for the tires too, and something to heat the rubber with right before you toss it down to run it. Traction will be your biggest challange in straight line acceleration.

I can't decide if its more fun
to make it...
or break it...

your best uption would be to try and use an onroad 1/8 and convert that to brushless ...... sick speeds and may even match the 1/10 for excelleration.

I have 2x of the prp's that i'm gonna convert myself....

there wy less expensive then the megens, kyosho, and serpent, but performance is the same :-)

Very clean and sleek looking Joe. Love the Red Back theme.
Good luck with the drags.

remember the laws a motion though.... you need more room to stop than a 1/10 car
