If you are looking for a free CAD program, Google Sketchup works pretty well, but the free version won't export to any kind of file format that your machinist can work with. My vote? Go download a torrent of Solidworks and start learning real CAD software. It makes the design process so much easier.

Torrents - as in Bittorrent - a popular method of downloading software or media content through a peer to peer network. If you are willing to use an unlicensed and cracked version of the software then it is available for free. I'm not advocating, just making aware of options.

I use a fully licensed version at work, but at home to mess around with on various personal projects, I use the unlicensed version I downloaded. And yes it is a few thousand to purchase.

Carbon top plate came out nice, good job.
Q; will you install a brace where the cut out is on the right side of the chassis ?

I retired from RC, now life is all about guns and long range shooting.

a brace? i dont like how the side parts of this chassis have all the cutouts. that will just let dirt in. so i already have a fix for this. i found some huge mudguards from another 1/5 kit that match up sweet. i will be mounting those up soon. i want to keep the inside of this thing as clean and dry as i can being as it will have $1k worth of motor and esc in it. lol.

That 805 is nice servo. We use them in gas boats all the time. The only downfall is the Nylon gears...

dude, i love your avatar!

so i have been looking at servos non stop the last day or two and having a tuff time deciding. i have looked at that hitec one but i wont get a servo with nylon gears no matter what they say it is rated at. just a thing. i got to have metal gears. so here is what i have found. i already bought one servo that i thought was a 1/4 servo but it turns out its regular size. just got it yesterday. its the futaba s9157 rated at 425oz so i will just keep it for the brakes.

i think i want to stick with either futaba or the hpi servo though cuz that way i can use the HD HPI servo arm.

one option is to get the HPI sfl 10 and then get the metal gear upgrade here.

http://www.davesmotors.com/s.nl/c.88...t.A/id.5654/.f

there is still one plastic gear this route but its good for over 300oz at peak torque.

then there is the new sfl 30 which is good for 250oz thru the entire sweep of the servo arm. http://largescalerc.com/index.asp?Pa...l=&strCompare=

then there is this homemade servo on ebay that is all metal gears and 310oz
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=200342803691

but whats a "programmable servo" and is the spektrum dx3r a analog or digital radio? what is the difference between digital and analog servos?

and here are the futaba servos i am considering:

http://largescalerc.com/index.asp?Pa...l=&strCompare=

http://www.servocity.com/html/s5301_...hi-torque.html

http://www.servocity.com/html/s5302_..._hi-speed.html

here is what i dont get though. how come the standard size servos put out way more torque than the large scale ones? also, when it comes to the large scale servos the nylon gear ones offer mor torque than the metal gear servos. why is this?

why cant hitec just offer a 1/4 scale titanium gear 480oz servo like their new standard size servo? that would be sweet!

i am pretty sure i am gonna get the either the futaba s5050 or the s5301. i just need to know whether i need a digital or analog servo and what difference does it make.

so many questions.

oh, and check this out! wish this would have been on ebay 2 weeks ago.

The 5T body has a longer wheelbase than the Rampage. The Proline 5b/5t "conversion" body might work though as it has a slightly shorter wheelbase.

I'd go with the S5301 if you're sticking with futaba. FYI the Hitec I purchased for my FG came with a heavy duty aluminum servo arm, not sure if they all do or not. As far as digital goes, it depends on your radio. Some radios can't use analog servos because of the module in them. Thats all I know, maybe someone else can shed more light on this subject.

As far as programming servos, unless its a track vehicle and your that picky or some highly specialized application (robotics come to mind) its not something most would mess with. Most high end radios have enough adjustments (epa, subtrim, etc) to not need the feature.

cool. thanks. i did find an article today that explained the difference between digital and analog. i am gonna get the s5050 after reading this article.

i wish i had a 5t body i could check to see how it fit. i love how that 5t body looks.

here is the article: http://www.futaba-rc.com/servos/digitalservos.pdf

here is the break setup i want to run. this is from a 1/5 Nutech/Smartech. i cant find anywhere that sells parts though except for in AU and it is $50 to ship. however, Redcat becomes the new USA dist. for Nutech next month and then they will have the parts. anyway, i just want to buy the complete diff mounts, top plate, and brake parts and i know i could make it work on my rampage. imo, this would be the easiest brake solution.
