Next Buggy Project??? -
12.13.2006, 03:30 AM
I seem to have caught the BUG for a 4wd buggy again...
I can't seem to decide whether to convert a 1/8th scale buggy to BL or install a BL system in a 1/10th scale racer like one of the following: - DF03
- XXX-4G+
- Academy SB Pro
- Yokomo MR-4BC
- BJ4 kit
- Schumacher Cat 4k
- TT Pred. x10
- ZX-5
I am leaning towards a 1/10th racer like the Kyosho Lazer ZX5 or the TTech Predator X10 because I will ultimately be racing this buggy in the near future.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

x10.. No doubt.
You missed another strong competor. That new Tamiya buggy. (the high end one with CF and aluminum. But to choose between the X10 and the tamiya; X10. Topnotch engineering

IMO it would be between the ZX5 , X10 and the new tamiya. I just love the suspension and low-profile of the x10
The problem with nitro's these days are that they arent brushless... LOL

If you got a rough track, the x10 might not be for you. I like the DF-03 becauce the batteries are centered, I have never liked the batteries on one side, even though i have been shown they balance out, Just a preference
Work because i gotta, play because i wanna
People here hate Nitro, I love it. I start it, run it about 50 ft from me and it dies, I go after it. Perfect exercise

So I gather the x10 would be a better choice than convert a 1/8th buggy?
Is the x10 hard to dial in on a rough track?
I like the Tamiya DF03 but I don't think I can fit my A123's in there :007:
The x10 may be a little over my budget so I would have to settle for the XRS or wait a bit to get the extra funds.

Well, a 1/8 buggy would be sweet, but it really depends on what people race more at your track, 4wd 1/10 buggy or 1/8 buggy?

They don't race either so I'd have to run with the 1/8th nitros or the 1/10th 2wd. I guess I could try and race a 1/10th 4wd against the 1/8th 4wd but I'm not sure how they would feel about that... Especialy say, if I won :005:

I guess my goal is to get some perspective on the 1/10th scale 4wd buggies and see how you guys think they stand up against the 1/8th buggies. I'll have to find out what my lhs has to say about it too :027:
I wish there was a 1/8th scale version of the X10 :017:
But then again, they would probably make it nitro :mad:1

Well, ive seen both the X10 and a 1/8 Hyper 7 (bl) run at the track. Let me tell you, both were a sight to see. the X10 handles like a dream, but wouldnt look to good on rough surfaces. As for the buggy, it looked like a perfect toy for the track, it was quick, handled well, and jumped even better. i actually raced the buggy, but it was a tie since both our trucks broke (he bent his shock and my diff blew.) Im gonna go back to race there with my new truggy, and imo, i think i will kick ass since ive got lipo and a 1950 under the hood :) If it was me, screw the pred. and get the 1/8 buggy. you will be very pleased.

I would say the same thing...1/10th 2wd is what I started with and it isn't all that great unless its an indoor track that is well groomed...1/8th buggy all the way...

I think the Team Magic M1 comes close in engineering.. Only their freaking shocks are a concern to me.. not straight aligned..

I'm not sure but according to all the magazines, it lacks rough track ajustability, but they all said it was first impressions. It was designed for european tracks with less aggressive jumps, but i'm sure it could be made to work good.

The Dark Impact and a 1/8 buggy both have different characteristics (I own both). The Dark Impact is a fun car to drive, and there's A LOT of aftermarket support for it. A123s won't fit into the stock chassis, but 3Racing makes a chassis (carbon fiber) that might be adjustable enough to allow you to mount the A123s into it. 3Racing also makes all other hopups for the DF-03, including front knuckles, carbon fiber shock towers, titanium turnbuckles, CVDs, nice shocks, etc., all at an UNBELIEVABLE price.
However, the 1/8 buggy will not need hopups to run well and to increase durability. Since it's a nitro conversion, you have more battery mounting options. If I had to choose, I'd definitely take the 1/8 buggy.
SH Z-Car, Custom Crawler, 8s Savage, 12s XTM XLB 1/7 buggy, 4wd 4-link rear/IFS Pro4 truck, Custom Hyper 10 Short Course, Belt-Drive Mammoth ST 1/8 truggy, 4s 17.5 MM Pro HPI Blitz
