so 80a/120a won't be too little? what if I decide to get a higher kv 1512, or a 1515 in the future? I'm still very cautious of over drawing the batteries.

I don't think it would be a problem...But I'm not positive...I guess it won't be though. I personally wouldn't worry about it...

two EVO 3700mAh 5S1P packs would give me 148a/222a/370a and 7,400mah for $470
or two MaxAmps Lipoly 6000mah 5S2p.. 180a/240a, and 12,000mah for about $400
so looks like truerc's are the best bet?

That is way more battery than you need. You don't want to be hauling around that much weight if you are trying to go fast. Get the TrueRC 4000mah 5s1p packs like Squee suggested and run them parallel for 8000mah 5s2p. If you are really gonna spend that much on lipos in one shot get 2 sets of them. You can always strap them together and run them as a 16000mah pack like you wanted. But, you wont need to and then you will have 2 sets of batteries. one to run while the other is charging.

I run a 5s 8000mah setup from TrueRC in my Maxx and Revo and have never had an issue at all. As a matter of fact I can barley warm the packs up. Ive used a bunch of deferent motors also. Feigao 9XL, 8XL,9L Nue 1515 2.5D (1700kv) and one run on a 1512 2.5d (2000kv).
While you may want to run a slightly hotter motor than these in your car, but it doesn't weigh as much as my 11+ lb revo so your amp draw should still be fine.
A 8000mah setup from TrueRC will be perfect. They might not be the best cells available, but for the money they are really hard to beat. I just got a 3rd set a couple weeks ago when they came back into stock. The latest set I got are a really nice build quality. They look really nice and are put together really solid. Dan over there must have been practicing.:018:

That motor is sick on 5s. I love it. I bought it for a project I am building now, but had to toss it in the revo over the weekend and give it a run. You will be able to gear that thing up and make that car of yours scream. My fat revo didn't even make it flinch.

that's a part of my problem.. i can't gear up without getting custom pinions made.. right now, everything's been running real cool, so I think it should be geared up more, but can't.. Mike did mention making custom pinions, but I don't know what size would work best. 30/45 ratio possible? i have no idea :032:

I don't think you need TWO of the 8000mah packs.... you mean total of 5s 16,000mah correct?
If so you can at least drop back to a 3p 12000mah pack. I have run that before in my truggy (4s3p 12000mah) and it holds voltage very well even at +100A spikes and hardly breaks a sweat at like 70A ballpark... that I'm guessing you will see on the track.

j, I ordered two 5s1p 4000mah truerc packs, and two 505 balancers last night.
along with a hitec 5955 servo, and some female motor plugs, from Mike.
glass, how would you go about splitting 5s3p into two even packs?..
5s ok for short periods with a 540c-9l?

Cool. Those packs will make a huge difference. (once you go Lipo... You never go back:018: )
5s on a 9L will get really hot... really fast. At least it did in my maxx.

glass, no oval.. that was the reason for starting this project, but the track wouldn't let me run my rc.. so now i'm building for fun. racing, drags, ect..
no 6s because of quark's "6s problems"
j, the packs got hot? or the motor? think it might stand a chance in a 5lb car?

The motor gets hot. Its just the rpm that does it. On 5s you take it way past its peak effiency range and it just starts generating a ton of heat. Your right about the light car you might be better off than a truck. Shouldnt hurt to give it a try, just pay attenetion to the heats.
(Ive never had an issue with the truerc lipo packs getting anything more than slightly warm in any setup)

sounds good.. i've run an old hacker b50 8S on 16cells before for ~6-8min at a time, w/ a hard driving style, so I figure a 9L shouldn't be a problem for short periods.

You can't :) I thought of that when I typed it... but you are running oval right??
2s3p on right side, 3s3p on left.... of course you may not want to do that.
My gut says 2p would be enough. How much impact do you think the extra weight of a 4p would have?? More weight will help it stick to the track but at some point it will hurt accel out of the turns enough to not be worth it.
IMO 5s will be fine on the 9L
Hey what about a 6s?

I was thinking of short runs on the oval...
I really think 8000mah will work very well in the car... and I don't think you will like the brick the car will be going any bigger.
What is the final drive ratio of this car?
