Here's our rules for RC Pro -
07.31.2008, 04:17 PM
Monster Truck
Scale - 1/10-1/8
Description:
To be a Monster Truck, the lowest point of the engine must sit at least 1.5" inches above the lowest point along the front-back centerline when compressed (usually the "skid plates").
To tech questionable MTs, remove the wheels, place MT on flat surface, compress the vehicle fully and a ruler (or 1.5" gauge) could be used vertically to measure the engine above the surface. No flat chassis (1/8 buggy style).
The following trucks are examples that fit within the above definition: T (and S) -Maxxes, Savage, MGT, Revo, TNX/TC, and LST providing no modifications have been made to make the vehicle not meet the Monster Truck rules.
Electric Monster Truck conforming to the rules of this class will be allowed to participate. That means they must meet the minimum weight. Electric trucks must make pit stops during mains. The appropriate number to be determined at each event which will be equal to the majority of the stops required by the nitro powered truck.
4 Stroke motors are legal. See the sizing chart below. Deisel fuel conversions are legal but must conform to the engine, Db and fuel capacity rules.
Minimum track width - - - - - - - - - - - - - Continuous 10 feet (same as 8th scales)
Wheel base - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Minimum 12 inches
Wheelbase -------------------------------------- Maximum 16 inches
Vehicle width maximum ---------- outside tire to outside tire ----------- 19.5 inches
Transmission - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Must be multi speed gear reduction. Diffs inside the transmission are allowed only. Front and rear brakes allowed.
Engine - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - .12ci to .28c
Motor -------------------------------------- Brushed or Brushless maximum 2 motors (mod or stock)
Carb ------------------------------------------------- No size restriction. Carb must mount securely to the motor.
Exhaust ------------------------------------------- Pipes must meet the 85 decibel limit and have no movable parts in them.
Minimum weight - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 2 Stroke .12ci to .20.999ci Small blocks: OR 4 stroke .26 OR Electric = 7lbs. 6 oz.minimum weight.
2 Stroke .21 to .28 Big blocks: 4 Stroke .40-.56 = 4300 grams (~9.5 pounds) minimum weight
Maximum weight for the safety of turn marshals ------------------- 13 pounds 6 ounces
Power ------------------------------------- NIMH-NICD-Lipo maximum voltage 16.8v
Fuel Tanks - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Single fuel tanks only.
Fuel Tank Volume Rule ----------------- Based on motor size. .20999 or less will be limited to a maximum of 150mililitres/cc ------------- .21 and over is limited to a maximum of 175mililitres/cc. This includes fuel line from tank to carb and filter(s).

Tires - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -Must be rubber only. No tires created for other vehicle types even if they fit the specifications will be allowed. Cutting or modifying the tread is allowed. Modifying the tire carcass by sectioning or narrowing is prohibited. Due to the varying sizes of wheels available for Monster Trucks it IS legal to trim the mounting bead of a tire produced for the Monster Truck class to make it fit a Monster Truck rim. Example - Bowtie on a REVO wheel. All tire measurements reference the carcass dimensions and does not include the tread depth or width.
Tire diameter- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Minimum - 5.1" (mounted)

NOTES:
1. All Standard MT's will run in the same class. Big block/small block is no longer an issue, larger displacement engines have a heavier minimum weight to compensate.

I think Nic is after a description for the speed challenges, not sanctioned racing necessarily. The main idea is to restrict what competes in the monster class as to not have a repeat of the wheely king incident from last year.

that is correct tex. I know i would be mad if i cam with a modded savage that is truely a MT and some guy with a emaxx pops in that has sway bars and less than an inch of the ground and whomps me. It would be expected in that case. that is why a standard data sheet should be agreed on. Notice i said AGREED on.
I fly, I drive, but most of all I crash.

WOW
This is more info than I expected! Thanks guys.......
Arct1k
You are correct.
I am trying to find out information for the International R/C Speed Challenge....
Pipeous-- thanks man- I sure hope you "copied & pasted" that info ;)
However ; this is more of a learning adventure (for me) --- rather that setting rules in stone (in this thread). We are using ROSSA rules & they are pretty much set.
What's important, is the Intent of the rule(s). If there is a large demand to run MT in a speed run competition --- then the rules will follow what makes the most sense. Speed run rules are more lenient ,to promote creativity. So I'm really looking more architecturally -- rather than , if it has a spoiler or not.
I think you guys know what I'm looking for....
Are any of you planning to attend?
This 2008 ISC is a little late-in-the-year event.
All this knowledge and experience we gain, will build for next years ISC.
Having your input will help if there is a "judgment call" at the event.
So thanks for the input! ----- And keep it coming.
Thanks
Nic

Well Nic, I think its about the drivetrain. Most of the curerent truggies have the same size tires as the MT's, out of the box. I think its more in the setup, Most MT are a transmission setup (a few have a direct diff though) and almost all truggies have a direct diff (except for the tamiya truggy, the current one not the prototype 801) I would say that 5"minimum would be ok for both. Ride height might be a concern for most, but not for me. As long as the wheels are set right for the current RC MT's and truggies (sticking outside of the body) I don't care about ride height
Do you have a breakdown for classes yet? Or, will it be run what you brung?
Work because i gotta, play because i wanna

This is the way the ROSSA rules sit, at the moment;
--------------------------------------------------------
Open Wheel Class
Vehicles are classified open wheel if they meet the following criteria
• Any Buggy, Truck or Monster truck based kit
• Bodyshell must not cover the wheels
• Wheel diameter to be (insert)
• Car must be programmed to stop in the event of a signal loss
Monster Truck Class
Vehicles are classified Monster Truck if they meet the following criteria
• Any monster truck based kit. Tires must be a minimum diameter of 130mm and 70mm wide
• No foam tires allowed. No sidewall limit
• Bodyshell must be identified as truck (Stadium, Pickup or SUV are permitted).
• Bodyshell must not cover the wheels
• Car must be programmed to stop in the event of a signal loss
Note: Technical inspection will decide if the entry qualified for the open wheel class or the Monster Truck Class.
________________________________________________
As you can see -- the biggest difference in mainly in the tires.
But it looks to me as the MT needs to be removed from the "Open Wheel Class". What do you think?
The Intent was to have a place for a buggy, whether it be 18th scale to 8th scale-------------- that someone can gear-up -- and go fast!
Same thing with Monster Truck--- the Intent is ---
If its going to be a MT record, it should be a Monster Truck . It's hard for MT to go fast. So it's a bigger challenge.
The added Intent is to be Fair & Reasonable. Without creating a class for every conceivable scale - configuration & power plant.

I wouldn't mind so much a truggy/monster class combined, so long as there are limitations to the build.
I like the rules they have set, I think it is an excellent start to build off of this year.
I would also agree to remove monsters from the open wheel class and leave that to buggies and the like. I still think an anything goes freestyle class would be cool. Anything from highly modified kits to do it yourself completely homemade jobs and such.

I just had a thought, what about the XTM mamoth and the hot bodies GTX series? Both are classed by manufacturer as MT's but look like truggies. Where would they fit in
BTW I like the rubber tire only for the MT class
